The Ranelagh SuperQuinn |
Hello friends! I’m diverting this next post away
from my epic Buffalo Staycation to talk about a grocery store. Yes, a grocery store. But not just any grocery store, it’s Ireland’s
SuperQuinn. News recently broke that the owner
of SuperQuinn (Musgraves) will be changing its name to rival SuperValu
and updating all 24 stores across Eire. So I need to process this food
tragedy. Irish readers I know you feel my pain, let’s discuss.
For me, SuperQuinn holds many memories and is a
place that brought a little piece of Buffalo to Dublin during my five
years there. Why? SuperQuinn is
reminiscent of the glorious Rochester-based Wegmans.
From layout, to quality, to food variety, SuperQuinn like Wegmans, is
in a league of its own. Europe in general isn’t really known for fabulous
supermarkets or convenience stores, but SQ really brought it to the
table so to speak. I remember oft going for my
weekly shop or popping in for a cheeky mid-week bottle of wine (their
selection and wine club are second to none!) , picking out the freshest
vegetables, meats and cheese, and feeling excited to go back to my
lovely house on Dartmouth Walk when I lived in Ranelagh. And of course, the SQ sausages, those legendary links! My
roommates and I nearly every weekend would cook up a monstrous breakfast
with those luscious links being the pièce de résistance of the feast. I
can almost taste those sausages now. So you can
imagine my horror when finding out about the SuperValu takeover. Fear
not, however, they will be preserved. Even Musgraves has realized what a
goldmine these pork delights are.
As for the rest of the legend that SQ is, I’m not
entirely convinced the new brand will hold up to its predecessor, I have
my doubts. But at least I know the next time I’m in Dublin, I’ll have
my sausies. Thought, comments anyone? Feel
free to express your grief, SQ memories below!
