I have always loved Philly; I remember my first trip there with my family when I was eleven. I had never felt such a tie to a place that wasn't Buffalo, and I felt it in Philly. The history, the food, sports fans, shopping, and general vibe of the city got me. Magically, I was blessed at Fordham to have made not one, but two really close friends, A & E, from Philly. I spent a lot of weekends there for regattas and with these pals.
So I was back in Philly this past weekend to celebrate E's wedding in the City of Brotherly Love. During this stint, I also managed to squeeze in a most excellent brunch with A at Hawthorne's in South Philly to kick off the weekend.
Hawthorne's is awesome. We rocked up to this neighborhood joint around 10:30am, bellies empty and with a slight thirst. I have to say, the wait was a bit long, but A and I occupied ourselves by scoping out the extensive beer fridges. They also offer you coffee on the house while you wait which is pretty cool. We sat down by 11, and then had to focus on the menu. I went with the Huevos Ahogados and A chose the juicy burger and a side of the pumpkin pancake to share. Dishes ordered, we picked our bottled poison from the fridges. The cool thing about Hawthorne's is that you can buy any of the beer to stay or to take away. They also have a rotating draught selection and growler program.
A went with an Ithaca Apricot Wheat and I for the Lake Placid Pumpkin Ale. No sooner had we returned from the fridge that our food arrived! The wait was well worth it because we were both so so satisfied with our meals! The Huevos were perfectly poached in a tomato sauce with cheese and even the side salad had a delicious twist of potato croutons! A's burger looked super good and expertly cooked rare. Oh and that pumpkin pancake? BLISS.
I was super impressed with Hawthorne's and would definitely revisit on another trip to Philadelphia. The food, service and brews were all fantastic! Oh yea, and the company wasn't half bad :-) Love you A!!
